SHIMAOKA TATSUZO

Shimaoka Tatsuzo-san was a Living National Treasure in Folk Pottery, and was an apprentice to Hamada Shoji.  He was famous for his “Jomon Zogan” or rope impressed inlay patterns.  He was an incredibly generous and talented man.  John first met him as a result of the Mashiko Ceramics Competition and after that visited with him numerous times in Japan and in the USA.

Shimaoka-sensei died in 2008.
